Habitat monitoring and assessment using high-resolution imagery (iHabiMap)
Can UAV’s (drones) be used as an effective tool with AI and machine learning to map and monitor priority habitats for conservation.
The UN report on Sustainable Development gave some stark warnings in 2019; “transformative changes’ needed to restore and protect nature”, “1,000,000 species threatened with extinction”. (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/blog/2019/05/nature-decline-unprecedented-report/)
In Ireland and across Europe, we are required by the Habitats Directive to conduct assessments of ecosystems. These assessments have traditionally been conducted by ecologists in the field. The aim of the iHabiMap project is to develop a robust tool that can aid and enhance these assessments using UAV and satellite data.
